SHELIA E, A LITTLE GIRL WITH A DRUM SET
by Dane Youssef
Yeah, this is for a little girl with a drum set…. named Sheila Escovedo.
So much was made of this nice special lady’s work with Prince Rogers Nelson.. and so little of anything else.
That little purple punk pop Yoda made a lot of timeless magic… and immortal legends out of his illustrious ranks: The Revolution, Vanity, Apollonia–all winners, just like the once and future Prince.
Yes, the Prince of Pop had many great protégés he took under his wing.
And yes, yes, yes. We all know she built a kingdom of music with the help of Prince.
But hell, she wasn’t the only great she worked with. When the ex-Beatle Ringo Starr formed a band in his honor… she got behind him too. And that’s damned good. The best should always work with the best.
I saw her in “Ford Fairlane.” Nice, but the poor girl wasn’t given much to do there. She looked nice, and she had that attitude.
But the best I EVER saw of her in was “Sign O’ The Times” where she was on-par with his royal funkiness, the bad one himself. She played those drums like she was trying to destroy them while making music at the same time. She blasted them.
If not for Prince’s always-superior work on everything, she may have very easily stolen the entire damn show.
So fiery, so electric, such raging sex appeal and hyperkinetic energy with those drums. No wonder the bitch performed with Prince himself.
She considers herself a drummer first, and a singer second. I consider her first-and-foremost (and solely), a musician. From “The Glamorous Life” to “The Glorious Train.”
This femme rocker to this day, appears only in high-profile stuff– 36th NAACP Image Awards,BRIT Awards, FOX’s The Next Great American Band, So You Think You Can Dance and the Latin Grammy Awards–just to name a few. That’s just the headline, folks.
And the most currently, the CMT reality show “Gone Country.”
And because she’s a star from way-back and we’re always asking “What’s happening right now? What’s next?” Where are they now?
I hope she’s doing well for herself now, wherever she is.
And still a musician. Still wailing those drums…
Are you smiling little girl, wherever you are?
