CHRISTOPHER ATKINS: THE BEAUTIFUL BLONDE BOY FROM THE BLUE LAGOON
by Dane Youssef
This blond, gorgeous prototypical movie star leading man made his big break-out role as Richard, the young adolescent male in the tropical romance film, "The Blue Lagoon" (1980) next to the one and only Brooke Shields. The movie cost basically nothing to make, but grossed more than five times the amount and more on home video and DVD.
"The Blue Lagoon" still remains a classic of romantic fantasy and adventure. Although most leading male actors have deep and commanding voices, Atkins himself had a childish, somewhat, high-pitched voice, which made him more endearing somehow. Atkins was a lifeguard when he was asked to audition for "The Blue Lagoon," which allowed him to show off his swimming abilities, hunky glowing good-looks and was established a bone fide star and sex-symbol.
Sadly, to this day, people still mostly know him or refer to him vaguely as "the guy from that 'Blue Lagoon' movie. You know, the one with Brooke Shields before she was famous." After the success of the film, Atkins couldn't go anywhere without being recognized. Women fans would literally tear his clothes off and fondle him. He became a sex symbol and a pin-up idol instantaneously.
But this statue-esque pin-up wasn't about to just sit back and enjoy the accolades. He was already signed-up for another movie, but it fell under the category of the "curse of typecasting" as he entered "A Night in Heaven" as a male stripper making it with just about every woman in the movie. He gets his come-uppence at the end of the movie at the hands of Lesley Ann Warren's husband.
His hair has grown darker over time, from platinum blonde, to sandy blonde... and finally to solid brown hair. Atkins played a sexual voyeur more wild and hellion when he joined the cast of the prime-time network CBS soap "Dallas" as Peter Richards fro
m 1983-to-1984. He romanced Linda Gray as you'd only imagine a Ewing would.
In 1990, he began to drift into made-for-network-and-cable movies, such as "Fatal Charms,"Project Shadowchaser III" and "Angel Flight Dawn." Atkins, tired of being recognized as the little boy from the "Blue Lagoon" straightened his hair back for a more rugged, grown-up, outdoorsy (like his company) look. It was a good move.
He posed for numerous magazines, posters and such wearing wore or less what he did in "Blue Lagoon" (a loincloth... or nothing). Atkins brought his Greek sex-god appearance to a great deal of B-movies such as "The Pirate Movie," "Caved In," " Spiritual Warriors," 13th Child," "The Employee of the Month," "Tequila Express," "Quigley" and "True Legends of the West." Atkins wanted people to know he wasn't just another pretty face and appeared in comedies to show off his more humorous side, such as "Mortuary Academy" (1988), "Shoot" (1992) and he even re-united with his ex-on-screen love interest Brooks Sheilds on her show as a fellow journalist who really just plain isn't interested in her. Really, really not.
Atkins began to with-drawl from acting so he could spend time with his children and run his business, Rocky River Outdoor Products. He still doesn't shy away from bit parts, charity events and guest spots.
And word-of-mouth (his mouth) that he's planning on getting back into acting.
