A BITE-SIZED BIO FOR JOHNNY GALECKI
by Dane Youssef
Red-headed, curly-haired, petite (he's 5'5") and usually soft-spoken pretty boy actor, Johnny Galecki (pronounced "GAH-LECK-EE") is best known for role as the deep, poetic, sensitive (and often bullied kicked-around target) of the nasty, acid-tongued Darlene Connor on "Roseanne."
This plum role on the long-running program not only made Galecki known, but got him heartthrob status as well. But this young actor was working long after "Roseanne" and he'll be working long after it. Galecki began his thespian ways at age seven at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Roles like "Fiddler on the Roof," "Pippin and Galleo." He was honored with a Joseph Jefferson citation nomination for his critically-acclaimed performance as John Henry in "The Member Of The Wedding" at the age of eleven.
But aside from his popular work on "Roseanne," he's been trying to stretch his thespian wings. He's played other roles in big-screen successes.
Like a jealous loser barring his green-eyes at Freddie Prinze, Jr. and his friends in "I Know What You Did Last Summer," a gay kid who's a value bag of sleaze in "The Opposite Of Sex," a child murderer in "Murder at My Door," a spoiled rich kid who's a worry-wart in "Suicide Kings" (a real scene-stealer in a movie with Christopher Walken and Dennis Leary) and a daughter's bad-boy biker boyfriend in Rowan Atkinson's "Bean."
He's been pretty busy playing switch-hitter, guest-spotting on short-lived TV shows like ABC's "Hoper& Faith," Norm MacDonald's "The Norm Show," both of Seth McFarlane's white-hot FOX animated cartoon shows "Family Guy" and "American Dad." And the TBS series "My Boys."
But some out there may have to ask--will there ever be another show he can make a real name for himself on--as a regular? Well, in 2007, he did so with the CBS "The Big Bang Theory" featuring Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar. The show was conceived by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, the same team that concocted "Two in a Half Men."
"Big Bang" is about a pair o' Caltech 20-something savant physicists, one experimental, (Leonard Hofstadter) one theoretical (Sheldon Cooper) who live across the hall from a knock-out blonde uber-hottie who dreams of stardom with a day-job of waitressing with show-biz aspirations (Penny).
Even his toughest critics have to admit that Galecki is more than just a pin-up (limited to the young girls who watch "Roseanne") or a forever synonymous typecast TV star. He's going to be a face to remember.
A name to remember. Even if you can't pronounce it.
